Economic Outlook

Airline passenger traffic figures at the Boise Airport have reflected more increased strength in the Idaho travel and tourism industries and the overall local economy. Recent reports indicate airline passengers either arriving or departing increased by nearly 9.1%. Lodging industry sales have benefited from this year's above average snow pack. Idaho travel and convention tax collections, a statewide tax on hotel and motel rooms and campgrounds, indicate that total lodging sales in Idaho during the first quarter of 2006 increased by 12.3% over first quarter 2005 levels. In addition to increased traffic and tourism dollars, the Real Estate market is still HOT! The number of new, single-family residential housing permits issued in Ada and Canyon Counties alone during the first quarter of 2006 increased by nearly 11.8%. Wow, and that doesn't include new commercial developments. One of the nation's largest providers of temporary workers to U.S. businesses is planning to open an office in Boise. Spherion Corp., whose $2 billion a year in revenues makes it the nation's sixth largest recruiting and staffing outfit, said it is looking for a potential franchise owner to work within the Treasure Valley and their goal is to open an office in the next 60 to 90 days. Economic observers say area employers are increasingly turning to temporary employees because of the state's record low unemployment rate. "That's the result of a strong local economy," said Idaho chief economist Mike Ferguson. "That's going to make Idaho attractive to a company that serves employers." In addition to Spherion, The White House/Black Market Women's Apparel chain will become the sixth national retailer to plant its flag in downtown Boise's BoDo complex. The store, which specializes in upscale, trendy women's apparel, but only in black and white colors, will occupy 3,500 square feet of space in the 50,000 square foot Sycamore Building. The White House/Black Market will join national retailers like Ann Taylor, P.F. Changs, Jos. A. Bank, Office Depot and Tully's Coffee. Wow, things are looking good in the Treasure Valley!
