Jan. 2005 Edition

While many of you may be experiencing a little bit of the "post-holiday blues" the rest of you may be busy making resolutions and anticipating the upcoming year. Although the holidays have come to an end, there is still plenty going on to keep you busy. There are many activities this month, just in time to properly ring in the New Year!

Community Festivals, Concerts and Performing Arts Events

The wonderful, exciting Irish dance, Lord of the Dance is coming to Boise again. Broadway on Boise brings us this spectacular performance, running at The Morrison Center, January 19th and 20th. If you are looking for something the whole family can enjoy - even the little ones, try checking out Shanghai Circus at The Morrison Center January 21st at 10:30 and 11 am, and 7:30pm. Shanghai Circus is a part of the Morrison Center's ENCORE for Children series, and the Boise Philharmonic will present their Scandinavian Winter concert, also at the Morrison Center, Saturday, Jan. 22nd at 10am and 7pm.

Treasure Valley Sports

Although our Broncos experienced a heartbreaker in Memphis, we are still proud of our WAC Champs, and anxious to see how they "Amp Things Up" in 2005. Way to Go Broncos! There is sure plenty of Steelhead action this month for all of you hockey fans. The Steelies play at home this month - Jan. 5th, 7th and 8th, Jan. 14th, 15th and 16th and then another round on Jan. 19th, 20th and 21st. Go Steelheads! If some basketball is what you're in the mood for the Stampede will play at home at the Idaho Center on Jan. 5th, 12th, 14th, 15th 25th, 28th, 29th and finally, one more time on the 31st!

January's Economic Outlook

Robert Lang, a demographer with the Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech recently stated that "rural states are appealing to people who want to escape the urban sprawl of big cities such as Los Angeles and Denver." That might explain Idaho's 4th place ranking on the recent list of fastest growing states from the US Census Bureau. With talk of "doubling profitability" from companies like MPC and major developments on the horizon - the momentum from 2004 hasn't let up in the first few weeks of 2005. With new products, MPC expects to add somewhere between 60 and 70 jobs, both in sales and manufacturing. In addition, the relatively low cost of doing business seems to be attracting well-established companies from other states. Honey House, a small maker of skin care items found it more cost effective to move their 11 year old company from Fife, WA to Star, Id. "Setting up a new factory in Idaho was cheaper than expanding in Washington," said Ruth Ingles, owner of the Honey House. Ingles plans a 7,200 square foot factory sometime this year in Star. New developments include construction of a new 15,000 square foot facility for Double D Service Center, a supplier of pet and ranching supplies. Construction will start this month on the northeast corner of Kuna-Meridian and Victory roads. The center will include a convenience store, fueling islands, as well as more retail and warehouse space. With their expansion, Double D plans to add around 22 more jobs. The Eagle Rd. and Pine area is expecting more changes. Ten Mile Development is reporting nearly 615,000 square feet of office and retail spaced planned for the site, including a 115,000 square foot anchor store. And last, but certainly not least, for those of you in search of some good wings, the wait may soon be over, HOOTERS plans to take up residence in the old Perkins Restaurant building on Franklin Rd. in Boise. Boy, 2005 sure is off to an exciting start.
